Suffering Whiplash After A Car Accident

What is a Whiplash syndrome ?

Whiplash occurs when a person’s head moves backward and then forward suddenly with great force. This injury is most common following a rear-end car collision. It can also result from physical abuse, sports injuries, or amusement park rides.

The rear impact causes the head and neck to be quickly forced into a backward position as the seat pushes the person’s torso forward. After a short delay the head and neck then recover and are thrown into a forward position.

  • headaches, specifically at the base of the skull
  • dizziness
  • blurred vision
  • constant weariness

How is whiplash diagnosed?

  • Pain, decreased motion and tight neck.
  • The muscles may feel hard or knotted.
  • Pain when moving the head from side to side or backward and forward.

Chiropractic treatment for Whiplash

Because each accident is different it is not possible to generalize about the chiropractic whiplash treatment. However, chiropractors often employ different treatments including:

Manipulation: The primary post accident treatment is the neck adjustment or spinal manipulation. The chiropractor gently moves the involved joint into the direction in which it is restricted. In some cases a slow mobilizing movement is used by the chiropractor.

Muscle relaxation and/or stimulation: consists of muscle manual pressure (myofascial release technique or trigger point therapy), gentle stretches or repeated contractions of antagonist muscles. If the muscle is very tight, a more vigorous stretch may be applied by the chiropractor.

Various exercises: Stabilization and sensorimotor exercise approaches are designed to correct faulty movement patterns in routine activities and everyday life. Such whiplash treatment trains the nervous system to better coordinate and control movement patterns, and improves the ability of the neck muscles to maintain stability.

Ergonomic and lifestyle changes: your chiropractor can give you specific advices to decrease daily stresses and its impact on the body.

These chiropractic advices can be related to work, home or recreational activities that perpetuates the dysfunctions resulting from the whiplash accident as well as nutrition, recommendation to speed up the healing process.
